Gilpin Lodge Review

Hidden in 22 acres of grounds with meandering paths leading to sleek, spacious lodges, this rambling country-house hotel 2 miles east of Windermere pampers its guests in a low-key way. The family-run hotel, in a converted 1901 house with two modern wings, has plush but understated public rooms furnished with comfy sofas and rugs and warmed by log fires. Bedrooms embody contemporary rustic chic, and most have sitting areas. Garden suites and a lake house have a more contemporary style, with patios and hot tubs in the former and a pool and spa in the latter. The superb restaurant (reservations essential) serves imaginative modern dishes. You can use a well-equipped, nearby health club.
