Northeast Sights

Beamish Open-Air Museum

Beamish Open-Air Museum Review

Made up of buildings moved from elsewhere in the region, this sprawling complex explores the way people in the Northeast lived and worked from the early 1800s to the early 1900s. A streetcar takes you around the site and to a reconstructed 1920s shopping street with a dentist's office, pub, and grocery store. Other attractions include a small manor house, a railroad station, and a coal mine. In summer, a steam train makes a short run. Allow at least a half day if you come in summer, less in winter. The museum is about 8 miles south of Newcastle.
