Shoulder of Mutton Inn

Shoulder of Mutton Inn Review

In an18th-century inn on the outskirts of an unspoiled country village, this cozy restaurant has sweeping views of the Dales. Exposed stone walls, open fireplaces, and original oak beams contribute to an atmosphere that is traditional but not fusty, a theme continued in the satisfying food. Incorporating local ingredients whenever possible, main courses include grilled cod with a crab, lime, and coconut crust and Gressingham duck breast in a Madeira sauce. A lighter bar menu lists dishes such fish cakes and a vegetarian pot pie. Dinner is served between 6:30 and 8:45. The inn's six rooms (from £65) are simple but comfortable. (Just to confuse things, there's a Shoulder of Mutton pub in Middleton Tyas, also outside Richmond, that serves highly-regarded pub food.)
