A 24-hour emergency service is available at American Hospital. Hertford British Hospital also has all-night emergency service. This guidebook does not list the major Paris hospitals, as the French government prefers an emergency operator to make the judgment call and assign you the best option. Note that if you are able to walk into a hospital emergency room by yourself, you are often considered "low priority." So if time is of the essence, the best thing to do is to call the fire department (18); a fully trained team of paramedics will usually arrive within five minutes. You may also dial for a Samu ambulance (15); there is usually an English-speaking physician available.
In a less urgent situation, SOS Medecin (doctor) or SOS Dentiste services send a certified, experienced doctor or dentist to your door, a very helpful 24-hour service to use for common symptoms of high fever, toothache, or upset stomach (the visit usually costs EUR 75). It's important to check with your insurance company before you leave for your trip to make sure that you are covered internationally.
