Château de la Treyne Review

Certainly the most spectacular château-hotel in the Dordogne, this Relais & Châteaux outpost sits amid Baroque gardens perched over the Dordogne River. Located in Lacave, northwest of Rocamadour, La Treyne was nearly destroyed in the 16th-century Wars of Religion but was reconstructed under Louis XIII. Today the Great Lounge restaurant (no lunch Tuesday-Friday) is a feast of crystal, boiserie, and Louis Treize chairs. Stylish guest rooms range from the stunning Prison Doreé (or "Golden Prison," set atop the castle tower) and the hyper-charming Soleil Levant (the former chapel, now glowing in historic lime and yellow), to a new deluxe suite with gorgeous antiques and views over the river.

    awful

    Who are they trying to kid. They're charging top whack Ritz, Four Seasons prices for a Best Western service. At 800 euros a night for a room you expect so so much more. The front of staff appears to be wholly operated by a bunch of feckless surly sullen sour faced trouts. Everything is too much trouble. There is no concierge. No porter. No help. One towel in the bathroom. One measly bar of soap. At this price! I asked for directions and one of the gorgons on reception replied, "Oh you again..." I requested for a glass of sparkling water one morning only to be told, "Non! Not possible." I asked for a glass of wine at 11 at night, and then again "Non. Not possible." Awful, dismal service. There is one lovely waiter, who seems to work his socks off and serves all the meals and carries all the bags. Shame really. It's a pretty spot. The rooms are titchy for the price. The decor looking shabby in many of the rooms. The pool is poor and you can hear the busy main road. But the food was very good. Avoid like the plague. Just go and eat.
