Zoos / Aquariums, Mitte
Fodor's Review:
The Sea Life group has aquariums Europe-wide, each with a focus on local marine life. In Berlin, the tanks begin with the Spree River, move on to Berlin's lakes, and then take you on a course from fresh- to saltwater. Waterfront city scenes are part of the decor, which gradually gives way to starfish-petting beds, overhead tanks, and a submarinelike room. The last darkened environment emulating a rocky coastline gets dramatic when rains come down and thunder and lightning crash. Don't come looking for sharks or colorful tropical fish: the most exotic creatures here are perhaps the tiny sea horses and spotted rays. The aquarium's finale is a state-of-the-art glass elevator that brings you through a silo-shape fish tank to the exit. Young children love this place, but the timed wait for the elevator can be frustrating for all ages. Be prepared for a line at the entrance, too.
