Berlin has had two "main" train stations for years: Bahnhof Zoo (in the West) and Ostbahnhof (in the East). Regional trains also stop at the central eastern stations Friedrichstrasse and Alexanderplatz. Since 2006, almost all long-distance trains stop only at the new central station, Hauptbahnhof-Lehrter Bahnhof, which lies at the north edge of the government district in former West Berlin.
