Don't pass up the chance to try Schwarzwälder Schinken (pinecone-smoked ham) and Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (kirsch-soaked layers of chocolate cake with sour cherry and whipped-cream filling). Kirschwasser, locally called Chriesewässerle (from the French cerise, meaning "cherry"), is cherry brandy, the most famous of the region's excellent schnapps varieties. If traveling in May or June, keep an eye out for white asparagus, the "king of vegetables."
