Shopping Overview

The Black Forest region is known for its handicrafts. Cuckoo clocks are still made (and sold) here, as they have been for centuries, along with hand-carved wood items and exquisite examples of glassblowing.

Germans prize Black Forest ham as an aromatic souvenir. You can buy one at any butcher shop in the region, but it's more fun to visit a Schinkenräucherei (smokehouse), where the ham is actually cured.

The northern Black Forest's wines, especially the dry Baden whites and delicate reds, are highly valued in Germany. Buy them directly from any vintner on the Baden Wine Road.

In Baden-Baden, high-end antiques shops have great appeal for both collectors and browsers, but you will need a well-stuffed wallet.
