Karmeliterkloster (Carmelite Monastery) Review

Secularized in 1803, the church contains the Archaeologisches Museum (Archaeological Museum), while the adjacent buildings house the city's Institut für Stadtgeschichte (Institute of History). The basement, titled "Die Schmiere" (The Grease), is a satirical theater.

Main cloister. The main cloister displays the largest religious fresco north of the Alps, a 16th-century representation of Christ's birth and death by Jörg Ratgeb. Free.

    Karmeliterkloster Review

The beautiful wall frescos in the Karmeliterkloster should be at the top of anyones list of things to see in Frankfurt. Painted by Joerg Ratgeb between 1513-1519, they have been lovingly restored the past 20 years. The life of Christ is spread out over 150 meters of wall in the Cloister. The Refectory has the history of the Karmeliters painted on its' walls. Entrance is free, so make sure you go see these. They will take your breath away when you walk through the door.
