Zwingenberg

Fodor's Review:

Eight kilometers (5 mi) beyond Eberbach, a castle stands above the village of Zwingenberg, its medieval towers thrusting through the dark woodland. Some say it's the most romantic of all the castles along the Neckar (the one at Heidelberg excepted). The annual Schlossfestspiele (06271/71286. www.schlossfestspiele-zwingenberg.de), with performances of Der Freischutz, takes place within its ancient walls in August. Park at the train station (15-minute walk to the castle, or take the shuttle bus departing from the station 30 minutes before the performance).
