Fodor's Review:
The three-story baroque structure, officially named Ruprecht-Karl-University, was built between 1712 and 1718 at the behest of the elector Johann Wilhelm on the site of an earlier university building. It houses the impressive Alta Aula (Old Auditorium) and the University Museum, with exhibits that chronicle the history of Germany's oldest university. The present-day Universitätsplatz (University Square) was built over the remains of an Augustinian monastery that was destroyed by the French in 1693.
