Just off Schillerplatz, the Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross) is Stuttgart's most familiar sight, with its two oddly matched towers. Built in the 12th century and then substantially rebuilt in a late-Gothic style (1433-1531), the church became Protestant in 1534. It was reconsecrated in 1958 after being badly damaged in a 1944 bombing raid. The choir has a famous series of Renaissance figures of the counts of Württemberg sculpted by Simon Schlör (1576-1608).
