Hexenturm (Witches' Tower)

Hexenturm (Witches' Tower) Review

The Hexenturm, a grim prison, remains from the time when Gelnhausen was the center of a paranoiac witch hunt in the late 16th century. Dozens of women were burned at the stake or thrown—bound hand and foot—into the Kinzig River. Suspects were held in the Hexenturm of the town battlements. Today it houses a bloodcurdling collection of medieval torture instruments. Tours of the tower, in German only, are offered on Sunday afternoon from May through October. English-language tours for groups of up to 30 persons can be booked in advance for €57.
