Taverna Tripa Review

This famous (and heavily touristed) taverna in the charming hilltop village of Kinopiastes has been in business since 1936 and has had more than its share of famous visitors (snapshots of everyone from Anthony Quinn to Jimmy Carter and Jane Fonda are tacked up on the back wall). Today it's owned and operated by Spiros and Rena, the grandchildren of the original owner. The fixed-price menu (€35) begins with a choice of tasty mezedes (small appetizers) followed by juicy spit-roasted lamb or beef baked in parchment and, finally, a selection of seasonal fruit and desserts, all of it washed down by unlimited quantities of the house wine or other drinks. Eventually the live music begins and local dancers perform Greek dances in the courtyard; patrons are encouraged to join in. If you're interested, the proprietors will take you over to the town's Olive Museum, where you can see old stone olive presses. Picturesque Kinopiastes is famous for its water and people come from miles around to fill their jugs at the local fountain.
