Hania

Getting Here and Around

Daily ferry service connects Hania with Pireaus, arriving at the harbor on Souda Bay every morning at about 6 AM and departing around 8 PM. The crossing takes about eight hours. During the July and August high season, high-speed catamarans also provide daytime service between Pireaus and Hania, and crossings take only about five hours. Souda is about a 20-minute taxi ride from the town center, about EUR 15, and municipal buses also run from Souda to Hania, EUR 1.10. Hania's airport, also on Souda Bay, handles daily several flights to and from Athens on Olympic and two on Aegean airways, as well as flights from many European cities, mostly charters, during high season. Buses run from the airport infrequently, so plan on taking a taxi or picking up your rental car at the airport. Hourly buses connect Hania with Rethymnon, about EUR 8, and Heraklion, about EUR 13. Less frequent bus service connects Hania with Kissamos, Paleohora, and many other places in western Crete. The bus station is at 25 Kidonias street, just off Halidon. The city center is well marked from the national road. For parking, drive to the center and make your way, following well posted parking signs, to the west side of the Old City, where you'll find free parking near the sea. Be careful where you park, as some places are open only to residents and violators are fined.
