Volos: Major Transport Hub

Volos is the major port city of the Thessaly region and bus, train, and boat routes often use it as a base.

There are many daily buses and trains connecting Volos with Athens every couple of hours (the trip takes 2½ hours).

In addition, there are daily buses and trains connecting with Thessaloniki every 2 hours (a journey lasting around 2 hours and costing EUR 16.60).

The Greek National Railway provides travel to and from Athens (a five-hour journey that leaves once per day and costs EUR 20.70), and via Larissa (a one- hour journey that leaves every two hours and costs EUR 2.10).

To travel from Thessaloniki one first heads to Larissa.

Trains leave every hour, the journey lasts 1-1½ hours, and costs between EUR 5 and EUR 20. One changes trains to Volos from there.

Volos is also important as a ferry hub and there are many boats, ferries, and hydrofoils that connect with the popular Sporades islands.
