Nafplion

Getting Here

Car Travel

A favorite outing for Athenians is to whisk down to Nafplion on a newly completely system of toll roads. The trip takes less than two hours. You may want to take a more leisurely trip and stop at the isthmus and Ancient Corinth along the way. Once in Nafplion you can usually find a space in the enormous free parking lot alongside the port next to the Old Town. From there you can walk to most Nafplion accommodations.

Train Travel

Travelers to Nafplion can also take advantage of the new suburban rail links between Athens (Stathmos Peloponnisou Station) and Corinth, where you can transfer to one of the four daily trains to Nafplion, for a total trip time of three to four hours. Trains to Corinth leave from the airport and Larissa Station in central Athens, and the fare to Nafplion comes to about EUR 10 each way; you can get some information on the rather confusing and inefficient railway network Web site (www.trainose.com), but you're better off checking with a tourist information office when in Greece or contacting the OSE Main Information Center in Athens (Karolou 13210/529-7777).

Bus Travel

Bus service, either directly from Athens or with a connection in Corinth, is good. Whether you change buses in Corinth or not, you will leave from the Stathmos Peloponnisou (Terminal A) Station on the outskirts of Athens (Kissafou 100210/623886); take Bus 51 at the corner of Zinonos and Menandrou streets, near Omonia Square, or from the airport, take Bus E93. Buses to Nafplion run about every hour and you should allow about three hours for the trip, which costs about EUR 12 each way. As of this writing, KTEL, the national bus network, is not publishing schedules on its Web site (www.ktel.org), so call 210/512-4910 (usually English speaking) or ask at the station or tourist information offices for schedules and other guidance.
