Opposite the Europa Hotel on Great Victoria Street and now owned by the National Trust (the United Kingdom's official conservation organization), the Crown is one of Belfast's glories. Built in 1894, the bar has richly carved woodwork around cozy snugs (cubicles), leather seats, color tile work, and an abundance of mirrors. It has been kept immaculate and is still lighted by gas. It has been immaculately preserved, apart from some of the stained glass windows that were blown out by an IRA bomb after having survived almost a century. They claim to serve the perfect pint of Guinness -- so no need to ask what anyone's drinking -- and a great plateful of oysters. When you settle down in your snug, note the little gunmetal plates used by the Victorians for lighting their matches.
