Brownes Brasserie

$$-$$$$, French, Southside

User Rating: ** 1.6

Fodor's Review:

"Dress to Impress" would seem to be the motto of this established brasserie; as soon as you walk up the granite steps into the small drawing room, the eclectic, luxurious decor almost assaults you. Italian-style friezes, jewel-color walls covered in gilded mirrors, velvet-draped tall windows, and crystal chandeliers all vie for your attention. In a sort of culinary fantasy, the food matches the decor in richness and variety. Favorites include char-grilled brochette of swordfish served on a bed of garlic potato with garlic puree and salsa verde, and escalopes of veal marinated in Parma ham and garlic, served with globe artichokes, linguine, and saffron cream. The lavender-scent crème brûlée is a lovely finish to a meal.

Brown lettuce and tinned mandarin segments

Posted by Orla from Dublin on 2/15/06

Was excited at the prospect for being brought to Brownes for Valentines. The result was EXTREMELY disappointing. My starter had ice-cream rasperrry sauce drizzled all over (duck breast). The mash for the mains was cold, the plates were cold. We were rushed through our meal. The white wine was warm, the red was cold. And to top it off the tinned mandarins on the soggy pavalova just took the biscuit. Oh and how romantic - the petit fours consisted of prunes covered in cooking chocolate. Will NOT be revisiting.
