$$$$, Kenmare
Fodor's Review:
One of Ireland's premier country-house hotels, this 1897 stolid and vast stone château has spectacular views of the Caha Mountains. No one can fault its setting: an 11-acre parkland, where every tree seems manicured and where magnificent terraced lawns sweep down to the bay. A welcoming fire is always burning in the lobby -- a cute and traditional setting, replete with tall grandfather clock. Beyond lies a drawing room aglow with ivory flocked wallpapers and any number of comfy chairs. Each of the spacious bedrooms is unique, though most have late-Victorian pieces; suites have walnut or mahogany beds, wardrobes, and chests of drawers. The restaurant ($$$$) serves justly famed modern Irish cuisine in an elegant dining room with lovely views of rolling lawns. The deluxe spa, on a wooded knoll neighboring the hotel, has individualized "Lifestyle" programs, which incorporate outdoor activities, including tai chi, meditation walks, mountain biking, golf, horseback riding, and walks on the Kerry Way.
