St. George's Heritage & Visitor Centre

St. George's Heritage & Visitor Centre Review

Restored by a local heritage group in 2008, St. George's Heritage & Visitor Centre occupies St. George's (Church of Ireland), built in 1827. The bright interior houses the Telford Organ (built in 1846), the magnificent altarpiece entitled The Adoration of the Shepherds (painted in 1831 by the Swedish artist Carl Gustave Plagemann), and dazzling displays of ecclesiastical silver. But many eyes will be focused on the array of motorized banners choreographed to rise and fall to classical organ music, as they unfurl the names of more than 270 Leitrim men killed during World War I. Next door, the story of Leitrim is told in a lyrical 10-minute film in the Visitor Centre (071/962-1757).
