On June 16, 1904, James Joyce (1882-1941) had his first date with Nora Barnacle, who would later become his wife. He subsequently chose to set Ulysses on this day, now known universally as Bloomsday – "a recognition of the determining effect upon his life of his attachment to her," as Joyce's biographer Richard Ellman has said. Nora, the daughter of a poor baker, was born here. Today it has a modest collection of photographs, letters, and memorabilia, and a small gift shop.
