Built in the late 18th century on the Owenmore River amid 40 walkable wooded acres, this huge, rambling, castellated, and gorgeous country house was the home of Richard Martin (1754-1834), known as "Humanity Dick," the founder of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Set in the midst of 300 of the most beautiful acres of Connemara, this has long been a favored forgetaway for the famous, from the O'Flaherty Chieftains to Grace O'Malley -- the Pirate Queen of Connemara -- to H.R.H. the Maharajah Ranjitsinji, "Prince of Cricketeers." Comfort without ostentation is the hallmark here, and because many guests are here for the fishing, the bar and restaurant are pleasantly informal. The tiled lobby with Persian rugs has two inviting leather chesterfields in front of an open fire. The biggest bedrooms, all most stylishly decorated, in the ground-floor wing, have four-poster beds and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto lawns that run down the river. Rooms in the old house are equally comfortable and quiet. The Owenmore restaurant enjoys a panoramic riverside perch and high style cuisine. The castle is signposted off N59 between Recess and Clifden.
