When the English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray stayed here in 1842, he called it "one of the prettiest, comfortablist inns in Ireland." You can understand why. Fishing trophies, Victorian plates, framed prints, and watercolors brighten up the lobby and lounge of this unusual, family-run inn. A fascinating mix of Victorian and older antiques decorates the sunny bedrooms, which have double-glaze Georgian sash windows. Delightfully, the rooms overlook either the Carrowbeg River or the pretty gardens. The pretty glass-pane Conservatory Restaurant ($$$$) serves fresh local produce and game specialties and the bar has an excellent, good-value menu.
