Fodor's Review:

Currently closed and undergoing restoration work by new owners (latest rumor: reopening in 2008), this fabled medieval monastery enjoys a magnificent hilltop perch and was a noted stop for Grand Tour-era travelers. Long famous for its gardens, its 1/2-km-long (¼-mi-long) terrace over Amalfi's harbor, and its Arab-Sicilian cloister, the monastery was founded by Cistercian monks in the 13th century as the Convento di S. Pietro della Canonica. Then abandoned, the complex was taken over by the Capuchins in 1583, only to be transformed into a hotel in the mid-19th century when the king of Naples suppressed the religious orders. Immortalized in postcards and paintings, the view of Amalfi's waterfront from the hotel terrace became one of the first travel icons of the 19th century. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow composed a poem to celebrate its beauty and Richard Wagner forsook his guest room to camp out under the stars. In the recent past, visitors could stroll through the monastery and let the centuries unwind: the 13th-century cloister has the intertwined Arabic columns of the Amalfi cathedral's great Paradise Cloister, the little church is a Rococo confection, and the spirit-warm hallways and salons were barely changed from the 19th century. Let us hope they survive the ongoing renovation to bring them all into the 21st century.
