Far from the madding, sunburned crowds that swamp Ischia, this luxurious forgetaway perches in splendid isolation on the extreme promontory of Punta Cornacchia. Standing on the terraces of this renovated castello, set over the blue Bay of San Montano, with yachts parading below you, it's not hard to understand why film director Luchino Visconti chose to live just up the hill. This hotel has nearly everything to tempt its privileged guests to stay put and relax: storybook cove, glamorous pool area, a cosseting restaurant, full health and beauty treatments -- although the vast Negombo spa is just down the road -- serious chef, and hundreds of pine trees for true peace and quiet. The ancient fortress has been sleekly renovated, perhaps too much so from the look of its umber-red exterior. Inside, all is white-on-white glamour with antiques and ancestral portraits as accents. The official address is Forio but this is much closer to Lacco Ameno, where you should get off if you're on the bus, where a shuttle bus is available to pick you up.
