This pretty-as-a-picture option is fronted by a vast garden terrace and has more sunny warmth than most formal hotels in Ravello. Hued in glowing terra-cotta, adorned with gorgeous flowers, and offering a sweet welcome thanks to entry salons replete with tiled floors, high ceilings, lace, and antiques, the Villa Maria has long been a popular option in Ravello. Other pluses are the delightfully friendly staff, the convenient restaurant, and the hands-on management of Vincenzo Palumbo (who recently bagged Gore Vidal's La Rondinaia villa and is renovating it for special guests). All but two rooms are standard, and there's an airy suite that has a large balcony overlooking the coast. Note that views here look out over the Vallone del Dragone, not the bay, but are memorable all the same. Also check out Maria's next-door sibling, the Hotel Giordano, a former 18th-century manor house, which shares facilities with the villa. The rooms are less desirable here, but the pool is closer.

Stayed here in 2003 and am returning May 2008. Compared to the high priced hotels like the Sasso, Cibrone, Caruso, Palumbo and Rufolo, this hotel is a good bargain. Many Europeans stay at this hotel which lends it a quieter and more refined atmosphere. The dinners are also excellent. You can walk everywhere and still come back to a lovely haven.
It is very easy walk into town to catch a bus down to Amalfi and a ferry from there to Positano, Capri, etc.
