Though the oldest on Capri (1822), this attentively run hotel has certainly not rested on its laurels. When you arrive at its front door you're immediately given a blast of island glamour, with gleaming lobby, and majolica-tile rooms providing a delightful contrast to the hustle at street level outside (this is just down the street from La Piazzetta). The famously tall palm tree at the hotel's entrance has long been considered Capri's "Eiffel Tower." Inside, all is yellow-on-white luxe. Through the lobby, make for the hotel's magical courtyard, lined with coves and columns sculpted in archetypal Caprese "zabaglione" stucco. Beginning life as the Locando Pagano, this hostelry first hosted August Kopisch, who then went on to "discover" the Blue Grotto. What he would think of the highly lush guest rooms, now dripping with "frescoes" and Dolce Vita accents remains to be seen.
