Getting Oriented
Emilia-Romagna owes its beginnings to the Romans, who built the Via Emilia in 187 BC. Today the road bisects the flat, foggy region, paralleling the Autostrada del Sole (A1), making it easy to drive straight through. Bologna is in the middle of everything, with Piacenza, Parma, and Modena to the west, and the Adriatic to the east. Ferrara and Ravenna are the only detours—they're to the north of Via Emilia.
