By Air in Naples and Pompeii

By Air

Naples is served by the Aereoporto Internazionale di Napoli, usually known as Capodichino after the part of the city in which it's located. Undergoing an ongoing rebuilding, the airport is getting bigger and there are now daily flights to New York City, although no other intercontinental flights. However, it has recently become a favorite with some low-cost carriers, which means that European connections are good. Alitalia flies throughout Italy from Naples.

The Alibus airport shuttle runs from 6:30 AM to midnight between the airport, Piazza Garibaldi (where the main railroad terminal is), the port, and the very center of town, Piazza Municipio (every 30 minutes; the journey lasts approximately 20 minutes, EUR 3). The slower municipal bus 3S runs from Piazza Garibaldi to the airport (every 30 minutes; the journey lasts around 30 minutes) between 5:30 AM and midnight, EUR 1. Taxis are on a rank directly outside the arrivals section of the airport. If you take a taxi into the city center, expect to pay between EUR 20 and EUR 25 for the 20-30-minute trip. If you're heading for Sorrento, check for the Autolinee Curreri bus at the bus stand outside the arrivals terminal. They leave eight times daily, the journey lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, and the trip costs EUR 12.
