By Bus in Naples and Pompeii

By Bus

Given Naples's chronic traffic problems, it's usually better to take trains when getting in and out of the city, or for travelling around the region. However, the Amalfi Coast has no train service, so if you go by bus the main operator is SITA, which has buses that leave from either Piazza Garibaldi or Via G. Pisanelli near Piazza Municipio, though there are a host of other coach companies that operate on long-haul routes southeastward into Puglia. SITA buses for Salerno leave every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday and every two hours on Sunday from the SITA terminal on Via Pisanelli. SITA buses also serve the Amalfi Coast, connecting Sorrento with Salerno.

Marozzi, a Rome-based line, runs direct air-conditioned buses from Rome to Pompeii, Salerno, Sorrento, and Amalfi. Buses leave Rome's Stazione Tiburtina weekdays at 3 PM, weekends at 7 AM. This service aside, trains are a much better option for getting in and out of the region than buses.

Within Campania, there's an extensive network of local buses. ACTP buses connect Naples with Caserta in one hour, leaving every 20 minutes from Piazza Garibaldi (every 40 minutes on Sunday). Buses to Santa Maria Capua Vetere leave Piazza Garibaldi approximately every 30-40 minutes Monday to Saturday (travel time 45 minutes). There are six buses a day Monday to Saturday from Piazza Garibaldi to Benevento. The trip takes 90 minutes.
