Basilica di San Nicola

Basilica di San Nicola Review

In the città vecchia, overlooking the sea and just off Via Venezia, is the Basilica di San Nicola, built in the 11th century to house the bones of Saint Nicholas, the inspiration for Santa Claus. His remains, buried in the crypt, are said to have been stolen by Bari sailors from Myra, in what is now Turkey, where Saint Nicholas was bishop. The basilica, of solid and powerful construction, was the only building to survive the otherwise wholesale destruction of Bari by the Normans in 1152.
