Almost entirely given over to parks, churches, and ruins, the area encompassing the Celio (Celian Hill) and the ancient Terme di Caracalla includes islands of quiet that seem far removed from the streams of traffic swirling around it. Several early Christian churches and the towering brick structures of the baths provide historical interest. South of the Colosseum area stretches the verdant Villa Celimontana park; hidden here is a place where time seems to be holding its breath, the Piazza Santi Giovanni e Paolo, accessed by the ancient Clivo di Scauro arched pathway.
