Fendi is still going strong after two decades of headling-grabbing styles. So much so that the Fendi sisters have consolidated their empire and crowned it with a new "Palazzo Fendi," the erstwhile aristocratic Palazzo Boncompagni, which reigns over the square on Via del Corso at the very bottom of Via Condotti. One of the great Roman names, legendary for its bags and furs, Fendi has been beloved by fashionistas ever since "Mamma" Fendi opened her doors in the 1920s. In 1963 she moved her little fur shop to Via Borgognona, which was unfashionable until the skillful team of Mamma and her five daughters began to attract such a following that everybody else decided they wanted to be there, too. Legend has it that Mamma always knew just what her customers wanted. Her secret: She hid behind a screen in the shop and wrote down everything her customers said. Another mark of Mamma's genius is that she hired Karl Lagerfeld to design the Fendi furs in 1975, when he was just beginning his career. His furs -- ripped, dyed, and sculpted -- became famed for their ingenuity. The old Via Borgognona store now just has men's wear.
