A Trastevere treasure, this may be one of Rome's newer hotels but has a pedigree going back four centuries. In parts ivy-covered, mansard-roofed, and rosy-brick-red, this erstwhile Renaissance-era convent has been transformed by Paolo and Valentina Vetere into a true charmer. Surrounded by towering tenements, the complex is centered around a monastic porticoed courtyard, oh-so-prettily set with orange trees -- a lovely place for breakfast. The guest rooms are sweet and simple: a mix of brick walls, "cotto" tile floors, modern oak furniture, and stylishly floral bedspreds and curtains. Best of all, the location is buonissimo -- just a few blocks from the Tiber and its isola.

We stayed two nights in the Hotel Santa Maria in October 2007 before an Easter Med cruise and the location and hotel were perfect for our short stay in Rome. You are in a Roman neighborhood and have an intimate feeling with restaurants aplenty just outside the gate. The enclosed, gated Hotel grounds give a private and secure feeling to the property - you do enter a different world as you're buzzed in and walk to and through the courtyard.
Our room was actually on the roomy side - in the extended or upper courtyard which put it at a distance from the couryard tables, office and bar. Although the entire Hotel is small so "traffic" and noise shouldn't be much an issue in any room.
The afternoon tea was perfect to tide one over between a day of sightseeing and the evening meal - typically 9 to 10 pm. And many of the sights of Rome are easy to reach from the Hotel - all in all it was a very pleasant place to stay . Streetcar stop not far away which opens up to all of Rome. Never an uneasy moment - stories of the street crime may be true but in our experience no sign of it. And within the Hotel Santa Maria you truly are in a cocoon of serenity.

We stayed here August 2007 and the hotel Santa Maria was our oasis from the brutal heat! The setting couldn't have been lovelier or livelier; the breakfast was sumptuous; the staff very helpful, and the location was the best. We walked to most of the sights, but cabs were always easy to find in the nearby piazza.
