On a small square just off Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, Paris (named after a former owner) has a reassuring, understated ambience, without the hokey flamboyance of many eateries in this neighborhood. It's been a Trastevere landmark for years, a favorite for classic Roman cuisine, particularly those dishes of Jewish Roman origin. It's a notch above your average trattoria or Jewish Roman joint, both in terms of price and level of elegance. The waiters are classically decked in creamy tuxedo jackets and black bow ties, and serve the clientele with reverence and wit (a difficult combo to come by these days). The decorating sticks to the classic Roman ristorante motif: curtains and ruffles, linens, and wall sconces. Of course, the lights are much too bright -- which is why, in warm weather, the outdoor tables are the ones to snag.

The atmosphere and service were great. The food however was below par for the price you pay. Apparently, decaf cappuccino is made with instant not fresh coffee.
