Vatican

Seat of Roman Catholicism and residence of the popes, Vatican City has religious resonance and artistic splendors. Mostly enclosed within high walls that recall the papacy's stormy history, the Vatican opens the spectacular arms of Bernini's Colonnade to embrace the world at Piazza San Pietro, an immense meeting place for the faithful and scene of the pope's public appearances. The Basilica di San Pietro, or St. Peter's Basilica, is astounding for its size and glorious (mainly 18th-century) interior, studded with artistic masterpieces from Michelangeo's Pietà to Bernini's great bronze baldacchino canopy over the main altar.
