San Francesco

San Francesco Review

In the mid-13th century, this Gothic-style church was built on the site of Etruscan and Roman baths. It's closed for reconstruction at this writing, but it contains frescoes dating from 1382, a big crucifix by Giuseppe Piamontini of Florence, and the Relic of Santa Croce, a vestige from the True Cross given to Brother Elia when he served as an envoy for Federico II in Constantinople. The church has a beautiful organ, built in 1466 and fortunately only partially damaged during World War II.
