Murlo Review

If you're heading northwest to Siena, stray 9 km (5½ mi) west of the Via Cassia to Vescovado and then follow the signs 2 km (1 mi) south to this tiny fortified medieval borgo (village) that has been completely restored.

Antiquarium Poggio Civitate. An imposing bishop's palace holds this museum of Etruscan relics. Although there are many beautiful pieces on display, the almost complete roof and pediment from a 5th-century BC Etruscan house are especially rare. The museum is named after the nearby site from which most of the artifacts were excavated. Piazza della Cattedrale 4, Murlo, 53016. 0577/814099. www.poggiocivitate.it. €5. Mar. and Oct., Tues.-Sun. 10-1 and 3-5; Apr.-June, and Sept., Tues.-Sun. 10-1 and 3-7; July and Aug., Tues.-Sun. 10-7; Nov.-Feb., Tues.-Fri. 10-1, weekends 10-1 and 3-5.
