San Sebastiano

Religious Sites, Dorsoduro

Fodor's Review:

The treasure this dull facade conceals is an example of what you could miss hidden behind Venice's many masks. This jewel holds an extraordinary collection by Paolo Caliari, better known as Veronese (1528-1588), who in his early twenties came to Venice from his hometown of Verona (hence the nickname). The first frescoes he painted in San Sebastiano launched an intense and celebrated career for this grand-scale decorator, famous for glowing colors. A contemporary of Tintoretto, Veronese lived in the salizzada nearby and took great pride in embellishing this, his parish church. He began in the period 1555-56 with Old Testament scenes in the Sacristy and episodes from the Book of Esther in the coffered ceiling. He progressed to the upper part of the nave, choir, organ doors, and frontispiece. Between 1562-70, he created Madonna in Glory with St. Sebastian, Saints Mark and Marcellino Led to their Martyrdom, and the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian. The artist, not surprisingly, was buried here; beneath his bust near the organ.
