fortress-castle Review

Pretty little Esch-sur-Sûre is reached from Clervaux via Wilwerwiltz and Wiltz. Completely circled by densely forested hills, this miniature gooseneck on the river Sûre was once a stronghold, and its ruined fortress-castle still towers over the town (unrestored, but open to the public). Legend has it that an Esch Crusader brought home a Turk's head and hung it outside the castle gate and that it reappears to this day to warn of disaster; some claim to have seen it before the German invasion in 1940.
