The Redlands: Places to Explore
Esch-Sur-Alzette
Esch-Sur-Alzette, founded in 773, was the heart of the Luxembourg's lucrative mining and steel industries in the 19th century. Now it's becoming a cultural destination, with public art lining pedestrian malls that overflow with café goers in the warmer months. The streets are full of life on market days (Tuesday and Saturday), when vendors sell fresh produce at the Place de la Résistance. The city also has some architectural gems from the past three centuries. A brochure for a self-guided 5-km (3-mi) walk is available at the National Tourist Office in the Hôtel de Ville.
