Just a few minutes' walk from the Westertoren, Anne Frankhuis, and the Royal Palace, this friendly hotel occupies a gorgeously historic building with gable roofs, Romanesque balconies, and half-moon windows. Perched above a ground floor filled with shops, overlooking the regal Herengracht, and several blocks from the hectic Dam Square, the Di-Ann is right in the middle of all the action (perhaps too so: delicate sleepers should opt for a room in the rear). When you enter, you need to climb a traditional narrow, steep staircase, so if you have any mobility problems, this isn't the hotel for you. Some of the attractively modern guest rooms have balconies, and those in the rear overlook a garden. Other rooms have views of the Westertoren, Royal Palace, or canal. The breakfast room allures with crown moldings, chandelier, and flowered wallpaper. Pros: good views, close to Dam Square. Cons: steep staircase, noisy location.
