Eleven 18th-century town houses make up the Terminus, between the Berlage Exchange and the Oudekerk (Old Church), two famed historic sites. The views of the Old Church -- Amsterdam's oldest -- are wonderful, but unfortunately, its bell chimes every half hour around the clock, which means it can be heard in some rooms even through double-glazed windows. The modern glass-paneled entrance manages not to detract from the traditional beauty of the buildings, and there's a solarium for sunny days. The guest room decor is elegantly modern, comfortable, and boring. The location is the greatest draw here: you're in the heart of the city, surrounded by landmarks and in the major shopping district. Pros: close to historic monuments, pleasant and helpful staff. Cons: no-frills accommodations, nearby streets attract late-night revelers.
