CitizenM Review
Trendy travelers on a budget will enjoy the cosmopolitan vibe, lavish public spaces, and airy guest rooms with their high-tech gadgetry—but maybe not the sci-fi-like see-through glass tubes that contain the toilet and shower. Tucked away near the financial district in the south of Amsterdam, this link in an up-and-coming Dutch chain is popular with suited business types as well as a mixed array of young and older international guests who mingle informally at the chic cafeteria/bar and in the lounges broken down into living room-like compartments.

Design Within Reach
From Delftware to DJs, the Dutch are masters at delivering functionality with flair. CitizenM is no exception. Its boxy gray building on a residential street deftly belies the den of design within. Swiss furniture company Vitra rainbows the lobby with comfy-chic lounge chairs, whimsical wall décor, and an open-plan sushi and cocktail canteen. Congenial "ambassadors," as staff are known, hummingbird around, assisting with digital self check-in or foaming up a perfect cappuccino. The compact modular rooms evoke yacht cabins (apt since Google Earth shots of Amsterdam's canals carpet the corridors), with king-size beds, mood-lit shower and toilet booths, plus free movies on-demand. The hotel's public iMacs and free Wi-Fi please hip businesspeople and busy hipsters alike.
