The only five-star hotel in the city is on the first 14 floors of the Millennium tower, smack opposite Centraal Station. Although this is primarily a business hotel, the slick-yet-friendly service of this landmark draws celebrity guests, such as pop and rock stars Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue. With regal purple corridors, lined with copies of masterpieces from Vermeer to Van Gogh, and bright spacious rooms -- each fitted out with a luxuriously huge bed, topped with a 10-layer mattress and sumptuous snowy-white linen -- it's hard not to feel like a member of the glitterati yourself. All the lavish bathrooms have tubs. The panorama across town makes the extra rates for rooms from the fourth floor up more than worthwhile, with many looking out over the Erasmus Bridge and the skyline (both dramatically floodlighted after dark). In the Lighthouse restaurant, chef Fred Smits serves superb nouvelle cuisine. Try the Irish Black Angus beefsteak served with tiger prawns or the fried brill fish fillet with anchovy risotto and smoked emperor salmon, accompanied by crispy ham and salsify. In keeping with the spirit of Rotterdam, the decor has a maritime theme; even the bar is in the form of a ship's prow. Fans adore the four-course afternoon high tea. There's a glass-covered skywalk to De Doelen concert and business center on the Stadsschouwburgplein, so on concert nights make the most of the Lighthouse's special dining offers to see just how good the chef really is.
