On a corner of rustic Veerhaven, surrounded by old sailing boats moored alongside modern yachts, this museum is devoted to non-Western cultures, many of which have had a sizable influence on Rotterdam. One of the permanent exhibitions is "Rotterdammers," which explores how the city developed in the 20th century with the arrival of immigrants from around the world. Another attraction is wonderful for children: the Hotel "Het Reispaleis" ("The Travel Palace" Hotel), a collection of "hotel" rooms of travelers from different countries that kids can explore either with museum staff or with parents, learning about other cultures as they visit the room of a "guest" in the "hotel" (who is supposedly out in town): knickknacks spell out the occupant's culture, job, and religion (one, for instance, is for a Moroccan photographer), and children are encouraged to try on clothes, shoes, and hats, and look in bedside tables to see what journals the guest has been reading. Video displays allow the guest to talk about his or her job, home, and friends (in pictures around the room). Result: children explore someone else's culture, seeing what is important to that person, in a "real" context.
