Rotterdam is very much a commercial harbor city, with hotels aimed primarily at the business trade; the Hotel New York, a converted shipping office from the first part of the 20th century, is a particularly atmospheric exception. The twin towers rising over the water of the Nieuwe Maas, across from the city center, were known to Rotterdammers for decades as the headquarters of the Holland-America Line, before being renovated and opened as a hotel. Rooms are individually decorated, with high ceilings contrasting with the modern decor, so it's not just the view that boosts the price. The enormous restaurant (which seats 400) somehow maintains an intimate café atmosphere, although those in the know delight in the afternoon tea served here but don't stay for dinner. Other amenities include an oyster bar, tea salon, and water taxi connecting the Kop van Zuid with the city center (EUR 2.70 per person, one way).
