Museum Boijmans van Beuningen

Fodor's Review:

Rotterdam's finest shrine to art, with treasures ranging from Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 16th-century Tower of Babel to Mondriaan's extraordinary Composition in Yellow and Blue, this museum ranks among the greatest art galleries in Europe. The top attraction here is the collection of Old Masters, which covers West European art from the 14th to the 19th century. In particular 15th to 17th century Dutch and Flemish art are well represented, including painters such as Van Eyck, Rubens, Hieronymous Bosch, and Rembrandt. The modern art section runs the gamut from Monet to Warhol and beyond, picking up Kandinsky, Magritte, and Dalí in between. In the Decorative Art and Design collection, both precious ornamental objects and everyday utensils dating from medieval times are displayed. In the museum café, note the fantastic collection of chairs, each by a different designer. Nearby, more artworks embellish the museum gardens.
